Larry Simmons of Colorado Springs, CO passed away in September 2021.

Caren (Sue) Carpenter, “Mama Sue” or “Queen Bee, ” went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, age 70. Her life began March 29, 1951, a date she later shared with her birthday twin and grand-daughter Carley, here in Chattanooga when she was born to Herchel, Sr. & Mary Ellen Levi. They raised Sue in the family of 8 here in Soddy-Daisy where Sue went on to be a cheerleader for Soddy-Daisy High School, from which she later graduated from just before marrying the love of her life, Jerry Carpenter on June 2, 1969. Their marriage produced their two major reasons for life, their son Jerald (Angie) Carpenter and Tonya (Frankie) Goins. As the years went by Sue realized a great love and passion for children, not just her own. She began a home daycare where many other children over the years became a part of her heart and family. After many years of caring for the grandchildren of other people Sue experienced the amazing joy of welcoming her own grandchildren…Dani’el (Andy) Becker, Carley Carpenter, Makayla Goins, Jace Goins, and Jeremiah Carpenter. Recently, her heart grew even more with the addition of her first great granddaughter on August 13, Elliott Jeanne Becker!

Along with her immediate family, she was loved and treasured by her sisters, Donna Copeland & Sherrye Skiles and brother Eddie Levi. As you can see by social media, all of her nieces & nephews knew the precious jewel she was and loved her dearly. Another part of her life and heart in recent years has been her grand dog “Buddy”, he thought she hung the moon and really enjoyed those secret treats of cheese she passed along. After retiring, Sue was able to travel with her husband to numerous car shows and enjoyed spending time with Bob and Francine Wilenius and their other Nomad Club friends. A special family friend, Ron James, has been a helping hand with her other passion of flowers and working in her yard.

We know without a doubt that she was welcomed into Heaven by her mom & dad, sister Kim Fryar, as well as her Father and Mother In Law, Carl & Oneida Carpenter, whom she loved deeply on this earth.

The family would like to thank her nephew Eli Sneij, his team of doctors and wonderful nurses at Erlanger Heath Systems for the kind and loving care they provided to our “Queen Bee”.

Sue and Jerry loved supporting and worshipping under the leadership of their nephew Tony McAfee at Covenant Life Church in Clinton, TN. If you feel so led, in lieu of flowers, please donate to the church of your choice in memory of Sue.

LaMonte Albin “Monte” Hollertz, 87 years of age, of rural Elm Creek, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2020, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Monte was born November 1, 1932, on the family farm in northern Harlan County, northwest of Ragan, Nebraska, the youngest of four children to Albin Melker and Blanche Edith (Hedlund) Hollertz. Monte grew up on the family farm northwest of Ragan. He received his education from Ragan Public School, graduating from Ragan High School with the class of 1950. Following his education, he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Harman in 1953, and to this union five children were born: Allan LaMonte, Susan Jean, Karen Lee, Kevin Monte, and Robin Lane.

Monte served his country in the United States Army from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1956. He was stationed at Camp Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas. After his discharge, he returned home to Harlan County and engaged in farming with his father northwest of Ragan.

In 1969, Monte was united in marriage to Rose Ann (Corbin) Smith, and they made their home on the Hollertz farm. Monte was blessed with Rose Ann’s two sons with this marriage: Tommy and Jeffrey. The couple blended their two families together as they focused their efforts raising their five sons and two daughters. Monte was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Ann in 1979.

Monte continued to farm full-time, and his hobby of restoring classic cars led him down a path to becoming a classic car curator. Monte started collecting Chevy’s in the 1960’s, and especially loved all the sport models. There were no two-doors or sedans in his early collection. He enjoyed traveling throughout the Mid-West on his journey for Chevy’s, venturing to other states as far as Oregon, and closer to home into Kansas. Monte enjoyed restoring his classics with his sons, and eventually found an old skating rink in Minden, Nebraska to house them.

The original version of Chevyland was in Minden for a few years, before he decided the traffic wasn’t what he expected. Monte did what any industrial farmer would do, and found a piece of land to grow his vision.

During this time, Monte continued to farm on a full-time basis, and worked nonstop to get Chevyland USA on the north side of Interstate 80 near Elm Creek off the ground. After the passing of his wife, Rose Ann, he took over as the head curator. On November 1, 1980, he was united in marriage to Joann “Jo” White of Grand Island, Nebraska. At this time, Monte turned the farming operation over to his eldest son, Allan, and he and Jo began to reside at Chevyland as full-time curators, and built a home onto the museum. Throughout the years, Chevyland long surpassed being Chevy-exclusive. He and Jo enjoyed many years welcoming visitors! At the height of Chevyland’s popularity, the couple clocked about 100 visitors a day to the museum. As things slowed down in later years, they enjoyed spoiling their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. At one time Chevyland was one of the largest private Chevy collections in the world.

2015

Russell Dale Pfeifer was born February 10, 1935 in Galion, Ohio to Ruth (Minor) and Russell A Pfeifer. He died December 5, 2015, at 80 years of age, at home.

As a boy he grew up in Galion, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois. Then the family moved toVermillion, South Dakota where his father started a new career. As ministers do move around, four years later they moved to Helvey, Nebraska. There he met a farm girl. After 2 years of college, Dale decided he did not want to follow his dad’s career, so he ran off to join the US Navy.

Two years later he was the preacher’s son who married the farmer’s daughter, on June 16, 1954. Sallie Shane and Dale were married for 58 years, and four children were born to this union. After 2 years of military life, the couple settled down to farming, and raising cattle and hogs, near Daykin, Nebraska. Then on to a dairy farm near Alexandria, Nebraska, also doing custom hay work. The family moved to the village of Alexandria, where he owned and operated Dale’s Service, Gas & Tires. He was also rural mail carrier and clerk in the post office, and Postmaster in Belvidere, Nebraska. In 1980, Dale and family moved to Davenport, Nebraska, where he was Postmaster for 20 years.

Dale loved making things work, automotive or electronic. Then, once he made something work, he took it apart and changed it. His first love was cars, and in 1964 he bought his first Nomad. From then on, the Nomad was king. Life at the Pfeifer home was trips to the salvage yard for parts. Then Nomad Club activities, all over the USA, Nova Scotia, and Canada. Oh what fun he did have.

Then came retirement, and plans for restoration projects in his dream garage. But a year later plans changed and a different direction was in store. A slowly progressing muscle disease was a life changing diagnosis. Dale fought the deteriorating episodes and a new focus began. Computers and photography became new hobbies. Dale could make his computer do things no one designed it to do. He could add people to photos even when they hadn’t been there. He rigged a remote for his camera to use when his fingers no longer would bend.

His power chair took him lots & lots of places–but he couldn’t run away from home, because he couldn’t cross the railroad tracks. He got stuck in the sand in California, and stuck in the mud in Nevada. He rolled down Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. He did surprise folks in Silver Dollar City when he took a corner around a tree on 2 wheels. But he had the most fun spinning circles on the main floor of Pershing Auditorium at an Eastern Star fancy do. He and his chair danced with his granddaughters at their weddings.

He enjoyed his new tv/computer room on the back porch. He listened to blue-grass gospel music and watched netflix daily.

The day before he died he went for a ride. He drove his chair out the back door, down the ramp, across the back yard, and went 2 yards over to check out the garage project at Littrell’s. Sallie wouldn’t let him drive in the front door on the carpet, so he came in the back door, was lifted and settled in his big chair. Then Sallie could hose off the mud, pine needles, leaves, and chunks of grass gathered on his adventure. The fact that he was wearing only a silk night shirt, no socks, and didn’t fasten his seatbelt, never bothered him in the least. He just said he wanted to check out the project, and enjoyed the ride. Sallie was scared he’d fall out of his chair going through the mud.

Dale served on many boards in the Davenport community, including Lion’s Club, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, United Methodist Church treasurer, and was Web Master for the Chevrolet Nomad Association.

Dale always said you teach your children by setting a good example, and he always did.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his much loved grandson, James Cannon. He is survived by his wife Sallie, daughters Laurie and her husband Gary Johnson, Carol Cannon, Darla Pfeifer, son Darrin and wife Kelly Pfeifer, 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, many cousins, a community of friends, and 500 members of the Nomad world in the USA, Canada, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia.
